Oblivious, you can’t go skydiving without a parachute but do you know how to choose the right parachute for you? If you are new to skydiving, then you might think that all parachutes are the same but this is not exactly true. There are differences and some skydiving parachutes may be better suited for you than others. Learning a little about parachutes will help you to choose the right one for your skydiving adventure.

The first successful attempt using a parachute is accredited to a Frenchman named Andre-Jacques Garnerin. After several experiments he designed a parachute and jumped out of a hot air balloon landing safely on the ground. However, he did have a few problems on the way down because he failed to place air vents at the top of the parachute and this caused him to swing back and forth wildly.

Of course, much has changed since this time and parachutes are much safer and more complicated. There are two types of skydiving parachutes available. The one you choose will depend on which type of skydiving you intend to do. The canopy and the design of the parachute is what will make the difference. Listed below are the two types of skydiving techniques you can choose and the type of parachute that is best suited for each one.

1.	Basic Skydiving – The parachute used for the basic skydiver is called the Ram Air. These are designed with parafoils that were invented to make it easier to control the parachute. This also makes them safer to use. The two sheet design provides high pressure that creates more stability and makes it easier to go in the direction you want to travel once the parachute is pulled. These are shaped like a rectangle or they can be tapered.

2.	Speed Skydiving – The parachutes that are used in speed skydiving are called ribbon and ring parachutes. These are designed to deploy when you reach supersonic speeds. It got its name because the canopy is shaped like a ring and the ribbons will spread apart under extreme pressure. It’s also designed with a very large hole in the center of the parachute to release pressure.

Obliviously, the most common type of parachute is the Ram Air because not as many people go for speed skydiving. That is reserved for the serious thrill seeker that is searching for a way to enhance the experience of jumping out of an airplane and traveling at incredible speeds toward the earth. For most people, a basic jump is enough.

The size of the parachute needs to be matched to the size of the person using it. This is very important. If the parachute is too small, it won’t slow you down enough and if it’s too large, you won’t have full control. Either of these situations can cause serious problems and you could be harmed.
It’s vital that your parachute is packed correctly or you may run into problems. It’s possible for it to not deploy or it may not open correctly. An improperly packed skydiving parachute could get tangled up with the lines when it opens. These situations could prove to be dangerous. Check and double check your parachute before you make a jump. It’s always a great idea and recommended that you have a reserve parachute just in case the main one fails. This is a sport in which it pays to be as safe as possible.

It’s interesting to take a look at the history of skydiving to see how it began and how far it has advanced throughout the years. Jacques Garnerin was a Frenchman that was also the first person to use a parachute. He jumped out of a hot air balloon during the latter part of the eighteenth century. He put on quite a show by during tricks in the air as he headed for the ground and shocked everyone even more by making a safe landing.

Kathie Paulus made a name for herself during the nineteenth century by skydiving in Germany. She demonstrated lots of skill that is still talked about today. Of course, things got even more exciting after the airplane was invented. This allowed the divers to get higher in the sky and travel at faster speeds. The first woman to jump out of a plane was Tiny Broadwick. She made her jump in 1913 and did a free fall dive in 1914.

During this time it was unusual for a person to jump from a plane for no apparent reason. Parachutes were used in the military as a way for troops to get to their locations faster and for pilots that needed a way to land safely when their planes were experiencing problems. It was referred to as parachuting during this time.

In the 1950’s a man named Ronald Young came up with the phrase “skydiving” and this is what it’s been called every since. After World War I, people began to look at skydiving as a sport. By the end of World War II, skydiving became a hobby for many thrill seekers. Not long after that, schools were designed to teach people the art of jumping out of planes and landing safely. Many of the more competitive jumpers formed contest and it became known as one for the most extreme sport in the world.

Today, technology has greatly improved and skydiving is more exciting than ever. Everything has advanced so much from the airplanes used to take you up in the sky to the equipment used in the dive. All of these advancements have made this sport much safer and there is less room for error. However, it’s still considered the most extreme sport around. It’s enjoyed by millions of thrill seekers searching for that ultimate adventure that will get their adrenaline flowing.

Skydiving is for men and women of all ages. The main requirements is being in good health and having the training needed to perform a safe jump. As long as you have these two things and the desire to do something extreme, the opportunity to get up in the air and experience a freefall for yourself is open to everyone.

One thing that most everyone will agree on is that skydiving is an extreme sport. It takes thrill seeking to a whole new level. Just the thought of jumping out of an airplane thousands of feet in the air will send shivers down anyone’s spine. This is where the phrase “pushing your boundaries” truly applies. There is nothing else in the world like making an extreme dive.

Skydiving is not for everyone. It takes a well adjusted confident person who has a taste for adventure to even attempt this amazing sport. However, desire alone is not enough to go jumping out of a plane. You also need the proper training and the right equipment. Without these it would be too dangerous to try. This is not a sport that you can walk away from if you don’t know what you’re doing. In fact, mistakes could prove to be fatal.

If you’re interested in skydiving, then make sure you are healthy enough to make a dive. Next, find a great school that you can depend on to provide you with the best training possible. Be fully dedicated and pay close attention during your lessons and when you’re ready, make a dive. Ask lots of questions and don’t move on until you completely understand each section of the lessons. No one should make a jump until they are certified and fully prepared.

Skydiving is truly an extreme sport that will get the adrenaline flowing and make your heart race like no other sport can. When you first make the dive you will be free falling at speeds that exceed one hundred miles an hour. After your parachute opens you will gently drift the rest of the way to the ground. However, you need to know how to control your parachute and how to land correctly. All of these things you will learn from your trainer before you go up.

Once you have made a few jumps it may begin to feel a little routine or plain. That’s when things truly become interesting. Extreme skydivers want to take it one step further. They usually find interesting things to do during their freefall rather than simply falling through the air. This could be anything from creating designs or patterns in the sky to getting married. Yes, it’s true. Some couples have said their vows after jumping out of a plane and while falling at incredible speeds towards the ground.

There are many different things that can be done during a freefall but one thing that most all skydivers enjoy is having these activities caught on film. This way they can review their activities and relive them all over again. After all, who wouldn’t want something as exciting as an extreme skydiving experience to be recorded?

Part of learning how to skydive includes choosing the right skydiving school. This is a big decisions and something that you should consider carefully. The first step would be to do your research and find a school that has a great reputation. This is a serious sport that requires you are trained by professionals that are qualified to teach. If you have friends that have been skydiving already, then you can ask their advice and see who they would recommend for you to use.

When choosing a skydiving school you should look for the following:

•	Experience
•	Location
•	Schedules
•	Communication Skills

It’s your responsibility to make sure you are in good physical shape before you take lessons for skydiving. Some schools will trust that you take care of this in advance and that you clear it with your doctor to make sure you are able to take part in this sport. Others may require a form from your doctor to ensure you are cleared to skydive. Either way, they should have a health form for you to fill out and sign stating that you are in good health.

Normally, after your ground training is completed you will be given test to make sure you completely understand everything that you have went over during the course. Don’t worry so much about passing the test. The important thing is that you understand everything that you have been taught because you will need that information when you make a dive.

It’s for this reason that you need to choose a school that has well-trained, easy to understand instructors that you can identify with. Skydiving takes skill and training in order to know the proper procedures on how to open the parachute and on how to land safely. If you have an instructor that can’t communicate very well, then you may have problems understanding what it is you are supposed to do.

You need to be able to ask lots of questions and your instructor should take the time to make sure you completely understand one lesson before you move on to another. You should feel comfortable and be confident they have the ability to teach you everything you need to know to make a safe jump.

At any time if you feel rushed or like the instructor is more worried about completing the class than about whether or not you are truly learning, then you may want to consider changing to another school. Your life depends on the knowledge and skills you learn during the classes you take so you deserve to have an instructor that is patient and thorough.

You can take lessons with a class or you can hire a private instructor, whichever you are more comfortable with. Either way, it’s important that you pay close attention to everything they have to say. Never make a dive unless you are confident you are fully trained and ready.

When you are getting ready to learn skydiving, one of the first things that you will learn about is the equipment needed. It’s vital that you choose the right skydiving equipment so you need to learn as much as you can in advance. The gear that you use is your lifeline and guarantee that you will have a wonderful adventure that you can talk about for many years. Faulty or unreliable equipment puts your life in danger!

Here is a list of the equipment needed to go skydiving:

•	Parachute – First and foremost you need a high quality parachute.

•	Automatic Activation Device or AAD – This device calculates the rate of decent and altitude. It will deploy the main or reserve canopy when you reach a certain altitude that is preset for the jump.

•	Reserve Static Line or RSL – These are attached to the main parachutes risers. They active the reserve parachute in the event the main one doesn’t open for some reason.

•	Altimeters – The visual altimeters are usually worn on the wrist or the front of your body where you can see your altitude. The audible ones are worn near the ear where you can hear the alarm sound when you reach a certain predetermined altitude.

•	Jumpsuit – The jumpsuit will be more comfortable and enhance your experience. They are designed from special fabrics that will actually affect your decent. For instance, the canvas suits will slow your fall rate while the slick suits increase your speed.

•	Boots – Wearing boots can help make your landing more smooth and easy.

•	Goggles – When falling through the air at incredible speeds you need goggles to help protect your eyes and ensure you have a clear view of everything around you.

•	Helmet – The helmet is a vital part of your equipment. There are a variety of styles available so you should take some time and try out different ones until you find the one that suits you the best.

You do want to buy equipment that is comfortable for you to use but finding high quality gear should be your first concern. Don’t skimp when it comes to safety items, these are as vital as the parachute itself. Using the right equipment will ensure that you are as safe as possible each time you make a jump.

If you plan to go skydiving regularly, then you may want to purchase your own equipment. However, if it’s something that you will only be doing once in awhile then you may prefer to rent the equipment when you need it. There are several companies available that offers this type of gear. In fact, some skydiving companies include rental gear in their price for taking you up for a jump.

It’s imperative that you always use high quality equipment but it shouldn’t stop there. This equipment needs to be properly maintained at all times. It should also be checked and doubled checked before and after each use. If you are renting the skydiving equipment that you use it’s vital that you always choose a dependable company with a great reputation to ensure your safety.

Even though the responsibility of the equipment falls on the company that you rent from, it’s still your life on the line. Due to this fact, it’s important that you inspect the equipment before you go out as well. It never hurts to get a second opinion or postpone your dive if you are unsure about the safety of the gear being used.

If you are searching for a sport that can truly give you a thrill, then skydiving is at the top of the list. However, before you venture out and begin experimenting with this sport it’s a good idea to know about the risks and safety issues involved with diving out of a plane thousands of feet above the ground. There are risks involved with any sport that you participate in regardless of what it is. However, when you are considering a sport like skydiving, which people do simply for the sheer thrill of it, the risks can be much higher.

The risk factor of any sport is measured by the probability of something happening coupled with how serious a person can be injured if something goes wrong. Each of these has separate categories that make it easier to judge the risks. These are listed below.

Probability Categories:

•	Very Unlikely
•	Remote
•	Rare
•	Very Likely
•	Frequently

Severity Categories:

•	Minor
•	Insignificant
•	Critical
•	Catastrophic

When you are talking about something like skydiving in which you jump out of a plane thousands of miles in the air and you’re free falling toward the earth at amazing speeds, the severity of an accident would fall under the catastrophic category. However, the probability would fall under the rare category because all of the safety issues that are put into place for this sport make accidents very few and far between.

When you are accessing the risk associated with skydiving you also need to consider the follow things:

•	Training
•	Experience
•	Quality of gear
•	Technology used

Being able to recognize a problem before it occurs will help to reduce your risk factors. Knowing and being able to execute emergency procedures when something goes wrong will also reduce your risks. You must have full knowledge of your equipment in order to have more control over the situation and lower your risks when skydiving. That’s why it’s imperative that you go through a training course before you venture out on your first jump.

It’s up to the individual person to decide whether or not the safety issues associated with skydiving outweighs the risk. In other words, if you feel like the safety issues that are addressed and put into effect for this sport are good enough to protect you from the risk, then you consider it to be safe enough to do. However, if you feel that the risks are just too great and the safety issues are not enough to protect you, then you consider it to be too risky for you personally.

These options are designed especially for beginners and they will help you build confidence while learning the basics about skydiving. You will learn how to have control over your dives and all the safety measures you need to know to stay safe.

Skydiving options for beginners:

•	Indoor Skydiving – If you want to learn how to skydive but you’re not quite ready to actually jump out of plane that’s thousands of feet above the earth, then indoor skydiving is the way to go. Almost anyone can enjoy this experience with a short training period to teach you the basics. Basically, what happens is, you will be placed in a vertical wind tunnel that will lift you off the ground. This will allow you to see what free falling at 120mph would feel like without actually jumping from a plane.

•	Ram Air Parachute System – It’s vital that you understand all there is to know about your parachute. The Ram Air Parachute System or RAPS is the conventional method of learning how to control the modern-day rectangular parachute. It opens by itself after you jump out of the plane and your instructor will stay in radio contract with you and give you instructions as you are headed toward the earth.

•	The Tandem Skydive – This is the best option for a new diver to begin with. This will help you build confidence while getting the experience you need because you will be diving while attached to a tandem instructor. He or she will control the dive while you enjoy the ride.

•	Accelerated Free Fall – The accelerated free fall is for the skydiver that’s ready, willing and anxious to learn how to become the best skydiver they can. Be prepared for lots of training that will cover all areas of your jump from the beginning to the end as you are being trained and qualified to be on your own.

The option that you choose will depend on exactly what you want to get out of this unique and fascinating sport. Is it something that you would like to do at least do once during the course of your lifetime or something that you might enjoy doing from time to time? Obviously, if you want to make it a regular part of your live, you need the most training possible so you can enjoy the thrill skydiving has to offer while staying as safe as possible.

Skydiving is for the thrill-seeker that is searching for the ultimate adventure that will give them something to look back on through-out their life. There are several myths surrounding skydiving that discourages many people from learning more about this intriguing sport. After discovering and separating the myths from the facts, more people will have the opportunity to enjoy all this amazing sport has to offer.

Below are some of the myths associated with skydiving and some facts to prove they are only myths:

•	It’s Very Dangerous – One of the biggest myths is that skydiving is the most dangerous sport you could possibly be a part of. When you think about jumping out of an airplane, crashing towards the earth at amazing speeds, relying only on a parachute to open and land you safely on the ground, it does sound extremely dangerous. However, when you look at the statistics you will notice that it’s actually safer than riding a train. The reason for this is because there are so many safety measures in place and so much technology put into the design of the equipment. As long as you have and follow the proper training, skydiving can be safe.

•	You Must Be In Excellent Health – Many people believe that you must be in excellent health if you want to participate in this sport. That is not true. You do need to be in general good health but even if you have some type of disorder you still may be able to make a jump. It’s best to visit your doctor and if they give you the approval to go ahead, then there’s nothing to hold you back.

•	It’s Too Expensive – It is true that the equipment is rather expensive because you need top notch quality equipment that you can depend on. After all, your life does depend on that equipment working correctly. However, after you make this investment there are opportunities in which you can volunteer and go skydiving for free for charities.

•	It’s for the Very Young – You do need to be at least eighteen years old to go skydiving but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it when you’re older. If you are in good physical condition and have the mental ability to do the jump, it doesn’t matter how old you are.

Once you separate the myths from the facts you see that it can be a wonderful sport in which you can have the time of your life. If you are a thrill seeker, skydiving is something that you may want to try at least once. Although beware, you may enjoy the feeling so much that you must continue to do it again and again.

Have you ever wanted to go skydiving and experience this incredible adventure personally? If so, you’re not alone. This is considered to be one of the most exciting sports around and certainly one that you would never forget. However, before you venture out and tackle this extreme sport you should know the facts about skydiving.

When skydiving was first invented it was not created for the thrill and it was called parachuting. It was actually created to give passengers of airplanes an escape route in the event the plane received damage or experienced mechanical problems while in the air. In 1797 Andre Jacques Farnerin made the first successful recorded parachute jump out of a hot-air balloon. Later it became a sport for thrill seekers.

At first, there were many anti-skydiving activists that were against making it a sport because it was reviewed as being too dangerous. However, as the facts became clear and the statistics proved that skydiving accidents were few and far between, the protest began to subside. As long as the safety procedures are followed and quality gear is used the fatality rate is very low. Studies show that in the United States the death toll from skydiving accidents average about 1 out of 100,000 of the jumps made.

Another fact about skydiving that you should know is that you don’t have to be a physical person to participate. You need to be generally in good health and be strong enough to handle the gear and pull the release ropes for the parachute but you don’t need to be a weight lifter or other type of athletic person.

It’s good to know that this sport is not just for the very rich even though many people think it is. Anyone can parachute from a plane provided they can afford the equipment. This can be a little expensive because it’s vital you have quality gear but not impossible. After purchasing the gear needed you can find sponsors that will finance skydiving for charity purposes or you can volunteer for special events. There are also companies available that will rent you the equipment needed to make a jump so you may want to consider this option.

Here is one fact that everyone would agree on, skydiving is one of the most exhilarating sport you could ever take part in. What could be more thrilling than free falling towards the earth at amazing speeds. However, it does take a dedicated person with lots of courage to conquer their fears and take part in this amazing sport. It will be the thrill of a lifetime and something you will always remember.

Skydiving is considered an extreme sport and there are some basic things that you need to know before attempting it. Skydiving is one of the most exciting sports you can do. Just imagine falling towards the earth at amazing speeds, what a thrill! However, it can be very dangerous as well. when experiencing this thrill you want to make sure that you know exactly what to do before you hit the ground or it very well could be the last thrill you ever encounter.

Skydiving is the ultimate thrill and it can be perfectly safe as long as you are prepared and follow instructions. A good skydiver goes through the training period and pays attention. You must be committed to learning all there is to know about this sport before you begin. Other requirements that are needed to be a skydiver include overall good physical health, plenty of confidence and courage.

If you have doubts and are not 100 percent sure this is something that you want to do then it may be better to wait a little while until you have more confidence. Skydiving is not something you can back out of once you jump out of the plane and you can’t afford to panic. Your life depends on you being sure you have everything under control and that you know what to do and when to do it. If your mind is clouded with doubt, then your judgment may be impaired.

Once you are ready to learn all about this incredible sport, you need to find a school that can begin teaching you all you need to know. Take some time and find a good dependable school that you can trust. Ask for references and talk to friends to see who they would recommend.

In training you will learn all the basics about this sport before you ever step onto a plane. Your instructor will go over all the safety rules, how to use the parachute, how to maintain control and so much more. All of this is necessary to prepare for a safe jump you can really enjoy so don’t get impatient. When the time is right and you’re actually ready, you’ll get the “OK” to go. It’s vital that you understand all the rules and why they are in place along with the risks you will be taking. This helps to get you more prepared mentally and emotionally, which will lower your risk factor because you will be more prepared.

The age restriction for someone to go skydiving is normally eighteen with no exception. Minors are not usually allowed even with parent’s permission. When you are ready to make the jump you should wear comfortable loose fitting clothing and running shoes or boots. When you are prepared and follow the rules, skydiving can be one of the most exciting adventures you ever take part in.

Keep in mind that skydiving is not called the ultimate thrill for nothing. Even though skydiving is not a physical sport that takes special fitness training to prepare for it, it does take a lot out of a person physically, mentally and emotionally. This is why it’s recommended that you see your health care provider before you start your training. Discuss your plans with them and make sure they think you’re in good enough shape to continue with these plans before you dive out of a plane.
