It’s interesting to take a look at the history of skydiving to see how it began and how far it has advanced throughout the years. Jacques Garnerin was a Frenchman that was also the first person to use a parachute. He jumped out of a hot air balloon during the latter part of the eighteenth century. He put on quite a show by during tricks in the air as he headed for the ground and shocked everyone even more by making a safe landing.
Kathie Paulus made a name for herself during the nineteenth century by skydiving in Germany. She demonstrated lots of skill that is still talked about today. Of course, things got even more exciting after the airplane was invented. This allowed the divers to get higher in the sky and travel at faster speeds. The first woman to jump out of a plane was Tiny Broadwick. She made her jump in 1913 and did a free fall dive in 1914.
During this time it was unusual for a person to jump from a plane for no apparent reason. Parachutes were used in the military as a way for troops to get to their locations faster and for pilots that needed a way to land safely when their planes were experiencing problems. It was referred to as parachuting during this time.
In the 1950’s a man named Ronald Young came up with the phrase “skydiving” and this is what it’s been called every since. After World War I, people began to look at skydiving as a sport. By the end of World War II, skydiving became a hobby for many thrill seekers. Not long after that, schools were designed to teach people the art of jumping out of planes and landing safely. Many of the more competitive jumpers formed contest and it became known as one for the most extreme sport in the world.
Today, technology has greatly improved and skydiving is more exciting than ever. Everything has advanced so much from the airplanes used to take you up in the sky to the equipment used in the dive. All of these advancements have made this sport much safer and there is less room for error. However, it’s still considered the most extreme sport around. It’s enjoyed by millions of thrill seekers searching for that ultimate adventure that will get their adrenaline flowing.
Skydiving is for men and women of all ages. The main requirements is being in good health and having the training needed to perform a safe jump.
